Revelation Chapter 1

DATE:

PLANTING SEEDS: (Truth)  Truth can only be found in God’s word.  People can share their opinion on truth, which I am going to do with you in a moment during my “Coffee Cup Counseling” section but I encourage you to personally start getting into the word and studying scripture. It will open up a brand new perspective and new life for those that take the time to begin or rekindle their relationship with God.

Scripture Discussion: Revelation Chapter 1

COFFEE CUP COUNSELING: (My Personal Perspective)
This is just our personal experience or perspective with scripture. By discussing out loud with one another, it allows us accountability for our thoughts and gives us an opportunity to interact with one another to give testimony on how scripture is personally changing our lives each day. When we do our family study, we go round robin and share our favorite part of what we read, or questions we had about the scripture. I will go first:

The part that stuck out to me today was how at the time John shared revelation with us, he was exiled to a deserted island to be alone probably without any medical attention, companionship, or food or water of any sort. He had to depend on God only.  And as he leaned into God, God not only used him to share a warning with him to give to us, but he supplied all of John’s needs.  We tend to think, by looking at the world today that we are a very persecuted church, but is that really the case?  When God spoke to Noah, how many people were living for God?  When Shadrach Meshach and Abednego were being persecuted, how many people were living for God?  They were thrown into a furnace.  Daniel, was thrown into a lions den, The 12 apostles were all imprisoned, exiled, beat and killed, for their faith.  All of God’s people have suffered persecution from even Religious leaders, of some sort for even mentioning Jesus.  Isn’t it cool that today, I can freely sit here and share the Gospel with you.  We can discuss it freely, currently without any fear of being imprisoned, beat, exiled, or killed.  What a perfect time to share Christ with the world, who is currently willing to listen!

So let’s get into God’s word, speak truth and set the captives free.

Scripture Memorization : Matthew 10:26-28 (NIV)
“So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.  What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

COFFEE CUP COUNSELING: (My Personal Perspective)
This is just my personal experience with scripture. It is just one of the ways that it has impacted my life and gives us an opportunity to interact with one another how it has personally changed our lives.

I’ve had a lot of breakthroughs in the last 12 years. I have shed many roots of unforgiveness, yet, not all, I have been freed from depression, I have been freed of loneliness, hopelessness.  I have been released from anxiety, my marriage has been restored, there is unbelievable peace in my life.  My perspective on life is filled with hope and awe and love, my trust in God is above anything else, yet my life is far from fixed or perfect and I still have a long way to go.

But how did I personally get here?

Well, that answer, will reflect why I am so strong on correction and the Holy Spirit’s conviction.  See, I believe that grace, love and mercy flow in huge abundance right now.  Huge, I can’t even begin to tell you, how much I believe that those three things are priceless and are all around us because of Jesus and God’s sacrifice of his Son on that cross, to be the redemption of a people that for the most part reject and don’t even love God.  So to say that those things are not important would be a tremendous lie and misrepresentation of who God is. But to say that I was saved by Grace…might be for me.

When God reached down and saved me in the tar pit of life I was in 12 yrs ago, that was a perfect representation of what God’s love and grace and mercy did.  Because that is who God is.

But let me say, that if all that took place that day was God’s hug and a group of friends that stood around me to tell me that everything was OK, and that I could continue to live as I always did because God’s love and grace and mercy was all I needed… I would have simply gone back to living in a way that got me in that tar pit in the first place and God’s love and grace and mercy would have simply been rejected by me.

So let me tell you what made me fall in love with God.  When I opened that Bible God’s word of truth, I read an almost exact representation of the life I was living, and how much it hurt God to see me living like this.  Honestly if you go to the 7 things that God hates, go ahead, look them up, I’m not sure I wasn’t involved in nearly every single one of them.  Let me just say this.  I have a completely clean legal record.  I have never been in any sort of legal trouble.  So you might say I was a good person.  Yet, according to what God hates, look it up, I should be in prison.  But I am not, I have been set free.  So yes, you must absolutely first understand how much God loves you, otherwise you will never have the trust you need to feel confident in his ability to correct you.

So ultimately, yes, I could say it was God’s love and grace and mercy that saved me, but that would only be half of the truth.  Because as I said that is who God is…it flows already in abundance.  But what actually continually strengthens my life is Christ, is when I engage and I learn to trust God enough to put me on the potters wheel and reshape my life to its original form and then add His attributes to me, which can only be done, by correcting all the flaws and cracks that I have allowed to falsely shape me in the world.

So you see, it’s God’s correction that captured me, changed my life and provided a break through in all the areas that I have need.

So get into God’s word, speak truth and set the captives free.

Scripture Memorization : 2 Corinthians 2:15-17 (NIV)
For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. To the one we are an aroma that brings death; to the other, an aroma that brings life. And who is equal to such a task?  Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word of God for profit. On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity, as those sent from God.

COFFEE CUP COUNSELING: (My Personal Perspective)
This is just my personal experience with scripture. It is just one of the ways that it has impacted my life and gives us an opportunity to interact with one another how it has personally changed our lives.

If you have children, a spouse, babysat for children, are a teacher or daycare provider, or have asked someone for any type of help, you have probably encountered “selective hearing.”  You will be able to certainly relate to what I’d like to share with you today.

For years, I struggled with what it meant to “hear God”.  I constantly was whining about how I didn’t know how to “hear God” to those that I felt were way more spiritual and experienced then me.  I read books, I talked to Pastors, I practiced.  I just didn’t feel like I could do it.  In actuality I was just using selective hearing. In my experience, looking back, the only thing that needed to happen in order for me to hear God is I had to listen.  Now once I had began to listen, the next thing to happen was I accepted Christ as my Savior, I asked the Holy Spirit to lead my life and I had to get into the word of God.  Once I started that ball rolling, it took off quickly and has not found a landing pad.  I hope it always has this momentum, and my guess is, that it will, unless I stop doing one of those three things.

I love spending time with God, I love that I’ve learned that the more I lean into God’s correction and away from my own understanding the more and more exciting and enjoyable my life becomes.  Once you realize that God is talking to a little ol’ nobody like me, who has done nothing spectacular, is not anyone famous, has nothing to offer, and he walks beside you through all your disappointments, your mistakes, your frustrations, your hard times, then they aren’t so hard to go through.  You don’t live in rejection, or shame, or feel hopeless.  You have a one on one mentor that continually encourages, instructs, and loves you through all the things we walk through while we are waiting for our eternal homes.

Not everyone wants this.  It will be very clear who does and who doesn’t as soon as you do.  It won’t take very long for your circle of people to make a decision very quickly about your choice to follow Christ.  I’m not sharing this with you from a bitter heart, I’m sharing it so you don’t get a bitter heart or discouraged in your choice to follow Jesus and be led by the Holy Spirit.  There were two types of people that rejected Jesus in the Bible that comes to my mind.  One, were those that were led by demonic spirits or their own fleshly desires.  Two, those who followed human religion practices based on control and power.  You will encounter the same.  I share this so that you can discern this right away and be prepared for it when and if you have made the choice to break away from the world and instead live a life of rest in Christ.

I remember working one day and a customer called in and was upset about a situation on his order.  As I tried to walk him through the resolution that we had in place for the company, he said, “are you a Christian”? “Yes” I replied a little confused.  He sternly answered, “Can we pray”, I smiled and said “yes of course!” and he began… and I began to feel very anxious instantly, this man had prayed this long prayer about God giving him his way in this matter and that I would just do what he wanted me to do because it was God’s will.  Like he had God in his pocket to do whatever he wanted him to do.  I was appalled and could not find my ability to say Amen at the end of his prayer. I actually hung up the phone and cried.  In another similar situation, I worked for an employer who before every board meeting, would come into work early and would go with a vile of holy water and mark above all the doors of those who she wanted to make do what she wanted.  I didn’t last very long with that employer. Sadly I had prayed for that position and it was complete financial freedom for my family, which I also prayed for.  I believed that God heard my prayer, however my health and my enthusiasm for life quickly declined.  I walked away, thinking I had missed God’s voice.  Yet, I’m currently making a living doing work I love, helping people, sharing the gospel when I can and very little stress, if any.

Living for Christ has been thee best decision I could have ever made in my life, and I encourage you to think about making that decision for yourself.  It’s not an easy road because you will be going against the flow of the rushing river of the world, but it will be the one thing that closes that “hole” in your belly that you’ve been looking to fill all your life.  All it takes is to shut off your “selective hearing” and begin a relationship with Christ…you’ll be quite surprised at all you’ll hear and how much you are loved.

So get into God’s word, speak truth and set the captives free.

COFFEE CUP COUNSELING: (My Personal Perspective)
This is just my personal experience with scripture. It is just one of the ways that it has impacted my life and gives us an opportunity to interact with one another how it has personally changed our lives.

We went to a Christmas Concert last night and before the show I enjoyed the opportunity to visit with people.  My favorite people to talk with are people who have experienced a lot in life. I began thinking about my Grandpa Wyman and what an incredible mentor he was in my life. He talked to everyone about everything.  He was genuinely interested in people’s lives.  I could ask Grandpa about anyone and he would share a 15 minute or more story about who they were, who their family was and somehow or another he’d figure out how we were related to them.  The stories were always edifying.  He never shared anyone’s dirty laundry.  Ever.

I want to be like that.  I try, but in order to do so I have to learn how to be selfless.  Like my grandpa.  Like probably everyone on the face of the earth, including my Grandpa, people hurt us.  When people hurt us we get offended.  When we get offended, we make poor choices.  When we continue to hold that offended mindset we get bitter.  It’s hard to talk nice about someone or really anything when you are hurt or bitter.

But my Grandpa did it.  I could look at my Grandpa’s life and see many many situations that could have made him bitter.  He was in the Korean war, but the only negative thing I heard him say was that the enemies leaders did not treat their soldiers very well, they didn’t provide them with warm enough cloths and they didn’t take care of their dead.  That bothered him.  Other than that, it was an honor for him to serve.  My Grandma was unfaithful to him and she left him with 4 children to raise, she died young and he never remarried.  All he ever told me about that situation is she didn’t have a very good childhood, she was a good mother and no matter what happened, he made a promise to never remarry.  He kept his promise.

My Grandpa has many people take advantage of him through his life.  I could name several.  It never seemed to bother him.  Instead, he took care of their kids so they could have a better life, or he encouraged them to “do better next time”.  He would talk very highly about who they would become instead of who they were.

What wisdom my Grandpa had.  Wouldn’t that be amazing…to live a life selfless, without regard to reputation or need for self importance.  Just getting up each morning, to work hard, to take care of our families, keep our promises, talk highly of others and on our time off, heading to a Melvin’s Cafe, or a Stadium Grocery, or a Conoco, to sit and have coffee with whoever was there, with no other intention but to be genuinely interested in their lives.

I know that I’m heavy on warning and correction, but don’t mistake the fact that I have a lot of my Grandpa’s genes and believe that no matter who you are or what you’ve done, you have the same ability to come to Christ as someone who has always lived for Christ, or goes to church every Sunday.  Also, know that I don’t have my life together and would love to be more encouraging and edifying.  I would love for God to pull out every single bitter root that has attached to my heart.  But in order to do so, I need to remind myself of my Grandpa and of Jesus and there are some things I must do.  When an alcoholic decides they are powerless over alcohol, they can’t just say it, although that’s the first step…but they must do something too.  Same for the changes you go through in Christ.  Once God puts His finger on something in your life, you must acknowledge and then repent.  Repenting is not just saying your sorry.  It’s acknowledging that something you are doing is not pleasing to God and hurting yourself and others, and then turning from it.  (Doing something)

I think we could all benefit from being more Christ-like.  But that’s a choice.  We don’t know when someone will make that decision.  Therefore…speak of others more highly than yourself, talking of what they will become in Christ…instead of who they are in the world.

So get into God’s word, speak truth and set the captives free.

Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, “Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?”
“No, Lord,” she said.
And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more.”

COFFEE CUP COUNSELING: (My Personal Perspective)
This is just my personal experience with scripture. It is just one of the ways that it has impacted my life and gives us an opportunity to interact with one another how it has personally changed our lives.

There is no question that the one single thing that brought me to my knees and broke me like no other was the moment I found out my husband was in a relationship with another woman.  Without that single circumstance in my life, I would have never have found my need for Jesus.  I’m sad that it took that situation to do so, but it did.

It could have been a million things before.  Rejection of my biological father, abuse by a step-father, alcoholism and drug abuse in the home, sexual abuse by a trusted adult, my dabbling in the occult, my own experimentation with alcohol, drugs and wrong choices, including my own affair that happened several years earlier, than my husbands.  But I ignored and blew past all the warning signs of my need of Christ during all those situations and I was led for many years by my own flesh.  My own feelings, my own way of handling things.  I chose many different ways to cope with life, but choosing Jesus was never one of them.

I think I was like many people who are confronted by Christ in the middle of poor choices.  I rejected them as much as I rejected Christ.  I am sure I turned my nose up and called them “holier than thou”.

Until I needed Him.  And I really needed Him.  I will never forget that moment that He audibly saved me.  I sat on the edge of the bed contemplating taking my own life.  Up until that moment I could figure out how to handle all the disappointments in life.  But this one, I couldn’t.  God audibly spoke.  “You won’t get to heaven”  I of course, argued.  He said again, audibly, “you won’t get to heaven.”  I know that God sees our heart so I know he saw my desperation at that time, but he also knew I did not have a relationship with Jesus.  At that moment, I took his audible word that suicide was not the answer.  I covered my head with my blanket and I cried like a baby for hours, weeks, months, years after that moment.

You see…we all think that Christians are out to judge us.  Don’t we?  We convince ourselves they must want or get something out of it, like money, or the pride of thinking they are better than everyone else.  But what if like God, Christ followers want to share truth and a better life for you, with you?

Looking back, God did not only show me his perspective on my own situation, but he opened up a whole new perspective about adultery all together.  Sin all together really.  But let’s take a look at how God handled the woman caught in adultery.

To the accusers and onlookers, AND to the man who was with her in the act of adultery, he told them that if they were without sin, they had the ability to throw stones at her.  Without another word, one by one, they dropped their stones and walked away.

To the woman caught in adultery, he pointed out her sin and told her not to do it anymore.

To the sinner and to show who is was- He assures us that we are not condemned but we will be corrected.

To me…he helped me see my own situation, the situation of those talking about me, spreading rumors of their own, my husband’s situation and the situation of the woman caught in adultery.  With that perspectives, forgiveness would be able to begin.  Because you see, when God touches a situation, it does more than just heal us, it begins to heal everyone involved.

Because God has no favorites, but complete love for all who call on Jesus.

In my perspective, I’ve had some really big things to overcome in life.  I didn’t start living for Christ until I was about 31 years old.  It came as quite a shock to me and most everyone around me when I did.  I barely attended church ever.  Not that I didn’t believe in God, but I was like most people who had much better things to do in this world than sit in a pew that no one really wanted to sit in, to listen to some drawn out preacher preach some drawn out message.  See the word before I came to Christ was dead to me, I didn’t live off it, I didn’t depend on it, so it really meant nothing to me.

Later, I would discover how desperately wrong I was.  I needed the word of God, more than the air I breathed and if I would have spent a little more time with God than I did at Church, I might have lived life quite a bit different.  But when I finally stopped running from God and started listening to him, big things started to change in my life. I realized he wasn’t the dictator I saw him as, I saw him as the Daddy that would never leave me or forsake me.  One of the many voids the world left me with, that I desperately needed filled.

I’ve spent a lot of time in the last 12 years letting God put me on his potters wheel and shed those BIG habits, I created, off of me, but in the last 4-5 of those 12 years, I’ve found myself focusing on the small things.  Those small things that aren’t so visible as the big things.  I and others that knew me 12 yrs ago could easily see all those big things that God shed from me. I could easily boast about all the great big visible things that God has done in my life, and my families life, and he has!  Yet, I know inside my heart are little things that God is working in.  My temper, my disappointments, my heart, my words, my actions…all those little things we might disregard as works of God because they are not great big for the world to see.

Yet, we know that God speaks in a still small voice.

You see the world might see the great big things that God has done, the world might look for the great big signs, wonders and miracles to believe in God.  The world might reject God when he puts his finger on areas of our belief system that doesn’t line up with His will. Yet, those that wait for the still small voice, and obey in areas of the still small things…those things that no one else might see, or give you a pat on the back for, or an applause ….those are the things that God watches for, when he wants to give you more to be trusted with because he loves you and wants the best for you.

So get into God’s word, speak truth and set the captives free.

PRAYER:
Thank you God that you not only care enough to pull out the big roots of bondage in our lives, but that you also pull out the tiny slivers.  Thank you for sending the Holy Spirit to be the voice of correction we clearly hear instead of the voice of condemnation that the world hears.  We accept your truth and reject the lies the enemy spreads.  In Jesus Name we pray.  Amen.

PLANTING SEEDS: (Truth)  Truth can only be found in God’s word.  People can share their opinion on truth, which I am going to do with you in a moment, but I would encourage you to start getting into the word and studying scripture for yourself.  It opens up a new perspective and new life for those that take the time to learn it for themselves.

Scripture Memorization : Genesis 4:6-7 (NIV)
Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”

COFFEE CUP COUNSELING: (My Personal Perspective)

This is just my personal experience with scripture. It is just one of the ways that it has impacted my life and gives us an opportunity to discuss with one another how it has changed our lives.

Have you ever had a situation take place in your life where you were not able to make things work as you wanted them too?  Maybe it’s a health issue you’ve been praying about, maybe it’s a relationship that you are wanting to restore, maybe it is a death of someone you loved, maybe it was an abuse that occurred in your life, maybe it was a marriage that fell apart, maybe it was an addiction that took hold of your life, maybe it was a financial issue, or one of the many million of things that might cause us to become bitter.

I’ve had several.  I am sure you have too.  The bible says in Proverbs 13:12 that Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.

So what happens when our heart starts to feel hopeless, or our perspective begins to get bitter, either at people or at God, because what we have been hoping for does not come to pass at least not as we want to see it?

It happened to Cain right away in the beginning of the Bible.  Both children of Adam and Eve, began their lives knowing God.  Like us.  Not able to walk with him as their Mother and Father had, but hearing the wisdom of their parents talk about their knowledge of their time with God and the wisdom he shared with them.  But both Cain and Abel had to live by personal faith without walking with God in the garden like their parents did. We know that they had an open dialog with God, like we can. Cain and Abel began to offered their fruits to God and we find that God was pleased with Abel’s offering but not Cain’s.  By this, we can speculate based on the wording that it was because Abel offered the best of his animals which had the blood offering for the sacrifice, (fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock) and that Cain just offered some of his, not the best of his crop as a sacrifice. (some of the fruits of the soil) He didn’t give his best.

God called him on it.

God’s correction and Cain’s disappointment as well as his jealously towards Abel,  began to make Cain bitter.  Cain, speculating, perhaps felt like God was favoring Abel.  Once that bitterness set in to Cain’s heart, he no longer had God thoughts, he spiraled out of control and killed his brother Abel.  But we know that Abel’s blood still cried out to God, and that Abel, was still connected to God even after his murder…but what happened to Cain?  He was eternally separated from God, and it was more than he could bare. So who’s attitude really killed who?  I’d say, Cain lost out.

Cain really is no different than us when we get bitter.  Some circumstance happens in our lives that makes us loose hope, get discouraged and perhaps makes us look at someone else’s lives and believe they have it better.  Instead of trusting God as Abel did, we start to do what Cain did and think about all the ways it is unfair and how we want to take matters into our own hands to eliminate that disappointment.  We all become like the ladies on Thelma and Louise when they’ve just put up with that disappointment too long and we start to spiral downwards making one bad decision after another until we finally see the cliff and instead of slamming on our brakes and humbling ourselves before God and admitting our own failures caused by our own bitterness, we hit the gas pedal instead and “dukes of hazard it” right off the cliff and straight down to our own destruction, just like Cain, not hitting the brakes, many times making that final choice to be eternally separated from God.

Instead, we should have the heart of Abel.  Working hard, giving our first fruits of all we do to God, honoring him in all we do, and when the opportunity arises for us to be bitter in life, and it will, because there are multiple attempts and reasons we could, we should, like Abel, humble ourselves before God, tell him our heart and trust him to lead us into truth even when we don’t see the bigger picture, or his complete plan unfold.

So get into God’s word, speak truth and set the captives free.

Smoke Screens

PLANTING SEEDS: (Truth)

Scripture Memorization : James 1:14-15
But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.

COFFEE CUP COUNSELING: (My Personal Perspective)
I remember when I quit smoking… both times…,  like it wasn’t hard enough the first time, I gave it another go round so I could try it again for the second time.  I literally thought I was going to die.  I didn’t want to quit alone, so I enlisted my husband to join me.  Yes, both times.  He literally thought he would die also.

I remember the first time I smoked.  I was probably 7, a group of us stole our parents cigarettes and hid, and smoked them.  Afterwards we plastered ourselves with perfume and brushed our teeth so we wouldn’t get caught.  Luckily, Ms. Osborne, my first grade teacher somehow saw us or something and told all our folks and we didn’t do it again for quite sometime.  Later, in 7th grade, I went to a friends house.  There were 4 of us and we went for a walk.  When we stopped in a secluded place, my friends all got out their cigarettes and they offered me one once again.  Under the pressure and the desire to fit in, I said yes.  I continued to smoke from that point until I was 27.  I quit before I was pregnant with my second son, and started again 2 yrs later, only to quit again when I was 31.

Smoking seemed very much relaxing, there is something in the cigarette that tells something in your brain that as long as you inhale this wonderful smoke, everything in life will be just fine.  Watch any sort of police or crime show and notice how when people get picked up they say, Can I have a cigarette?  It calms you down and makes everything more doable.

Quitting something you had done for 15 yrs is no easy task.  Add habit and addiction into the mess and you have quite the mix.  When we quit, I would go to bed at 5 p.m. because I could not handle the stress of the days. I would have nightmares all night long and I was about as irritable as a person could get.  I cried, literally from the pain and anxiety of not having that cigarette.  After some time, I could finally start coping with life again and I had to learn how to live life without that crutch.

Sin, of any sort does the same to us.  It starts off as a thought.  The thought if acted upon turns into sin.  If we take care of that sin right away, and admit its wrong, we would probably be ok, but if we continue to indulge in it, then we won’t see it as wrong anymore.  If someone tells us we are wrong, we will snap at them, and after awhile, it has consumed us.  Now if it doesn’t manage to kill us, destroy us or make us sick, we might have the opportunity to turn from it at some point.  Turning from sin, like quitting smoking can be a real process.  Having to undo damage that has been caused by years of participating in it can take time, pain and process.

What in life, might be different, if we would have just said no?  Do you think we could have saved ourselves pain and frustration.  Do you think life would have been better?

Of course it would….that is why my friends…we share the Gospel.  That is why I share the gospel.  I know in it, are the words that heal hearts, break sin, provide hope, turns lives around, restore that which was lost, gives warnings when we are about to sin, gives purpose and provides us a way back to Truth.

So get into the word, speak truth and set the captives free.

Did God Really Say?

PLANTING SEEDS: (Truth)

Scripture Memorization : Hebrews 12:4-12 (NIV)
In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.  And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says,

“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline,
and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,
because the Lord disciplines the one he loves,
and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”

COFFEE CUP COUNSELING: (My Personal Perspective)
I have taken lots of those personality tests and I love them.  Now I’m not so sure that they are my perspective, or how God made me, but I know that in scripture, we start out sinful and once we accept Christ, we should be moving more towards being Christ-like, so when I hear “I was born this way” when someone is trying to make an excuse for sin, I smile, because we all were, but we shouldn’t stay that way.  Anyway, my current personality is Sanguine/Melancholy.  So what that basically means is that I have a very high energy encourager side, and a very deep thought provoking not so encouraging warning side.  Now I used to think I was bi-polar in emotions, but I’ve actually very much learned to use this to my advantage when studying the word with my family.

See for a couple years now, I’ve been on this “God Balance” kick.  What I mean is, when hear someone preaching all grace and love and excluding correction and warnings, my red flags and bells and whistles start going off.  It does the same thing when I hear someone who is all judgment and correction without compassion, mercy and love.

I read the Old Testament, which is law and some like to exclude it, because they say we are not under the law since Jesus came, and I read the New Testament, in which some believe there no longer is a law and we are “once saved always saved”, then I get into Revelation and again my bells and whistles go off.  Jesus said clearly, in Matthew 5:17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. So as far as Salvation goes, it’s very clear that Jesus Christ is the hero of the day because Jesus answered, in 14:6 “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. There is no other way to be restored to God without Jesus.  But if that was all that it took, the Bible would be 2 sentences and it’s not.

So here we are on earth to make a choice to eternity. We’ve accepted Jesus and now what?  Well Jesus tells us, after he saved the day and then ascended to be seated on the right side of God to be our mediator to God, that he was going to send us a helper. And he did. Well, why would we need a helper then, if all we need to do is accept Christ and wait for heaven? We read it In John 16:7-11. So I understand it to say the Holy Spirit comes to help our Spirit discern between good and evil and that Satan has been condemned and we have been saved.  Everyone of us has that choice to chose between good and evil.  At anytime, until our last breath. But we don’t know when that is.  God is long suffering so that none of us should have to parish.  Unfortunately, we know some do not make that choice to live for Christ because the Bible says in Psalm 9:17 that The wicked shall be turned into hell, And all the nations that forget God.

Remember I said, we were were born this way?  In other words in sin.  Satan is waging war for us, because he is condemned, we are not.  But without Satan, we can’t make a choice to live for God. There would be no choice.

Now, when we sin…what happens to the believer in Christ?  We repent.  We tell God what we’ve done is wrong, the Holy Spirit checks our heart and reports back to Christ and God looks though Christ and remembers that Jesus paid the price for our sins and that we accepted Him as our Savior.  But what happens if we don’t repent?  Remember I said that many people like to believe that once we have accepted Christ, we are always saved, no matter what we do?  That’s not what I read in 2 Peter 2:20-22, which warns us that If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and are overcome, (they don’t repent) they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning.

It’s also equally scary for people like me who have a passion to share the Gospel, because the Bible also clearly warns us that in Matthew 18:6 “If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.

You see, there is balance in God’s word. I read in Revelation 3:15-17 God warns the church: I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.  I read in James 2:14-26 that Faith without Deeds is dead.  It says:  What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food.  If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?  In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

So you see my friends, it is good to understand that God is good.  That He is able to use all things for good to those that love and obey him and that God corrects and disciplines those he loves, so that they may join in His holiness.  I know we like the message of encouragement, but we should also be equally encouraged by Gods correction. That is the balance you should seek and count it as all joy that you are his Child.

So get into the word, speak truth and set the captives free.

Live Your Life In Such A Way

Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.

COFFEE CUP COUNSELING: (My Personal Perspective)
It’s rather comical looking back at what happened to me when I accepted Christ.  I went from a party happy bar owner, to almost and instant nun.  Ok not quite but almost. Sincerely, a few friends put up with me for awhile, but then one by one, they began the talk of what might have just happened to me.  I heard things such as, “she has gone off the deep end” to she finally broke under stress do to the affair” to my absolute favorite “she joined a cult”.

I hadn’t actually joined a cult.  I actually found a church, thanks to my Mom, where they not only preached the word, but they encouraged you to dig into the Bible and learn it for yourself.  They would be there to walk along side you, but this was a personal journey and you needed to take it for yourself to fully learn what God had for you.  Their part was simply to walk it out with you and provide an opportunity for you to come hear truth and ask as many questions as you needed.  I remember the first time I asked my husband to join me, he replied, I don’t want to go, they will judge me.  Oh no, I said, not this church, this one is different.  And it was by far.  The people that attended this church were fully themselves independently and corporately living their lives for Christ.  It wasn’t weird or strange, or perfect.  It was actually very flawed and raw and open and safe.  I never heard or saw them reject anyone that came in those doors and I never saw them treat kings different than beggars.  I love that.  I love when we do not exclude anyone from coming to Christ.

Sometimes, we like to see our agendas unfold, but then we only get our results.  I love to see God’s agenda unfold, because then we get God Moments.  Like what happened to me. I am certain it was strange and hard to explain or understand.  It was quick, it grabbed me deep and it didn’t let go.  I began to see things insanely different that I had ever saw them before.  I started to read the bible and I could not put it down.  I had tried numerous times to read the Bible and could not even slightly understand it, but now something had changed and I could seem to understand nearly every single word as if God was right there teaching me.  Like a good book that keeps your attention, this one did and I have never stopped reading it.  It continually gets better and better and better.

What I love that this change did most in my life is the outlook it gave to me.  It gave me a hope that never subsides, I still have sorrows and troubles, but I never get so low that I don’t believe that God is going to restore joy or understanding.  I love that my heart became molded as a wife and mother who puts God first and her family second.  It wasn’t always that way.  I love that when my husband and children look back on life, they will see a home filled with mistakes, but searching for answers in the truth of God’s word, and that they will have always known they were first in my life and always without a doubt loved.

So share away. Speak truth, set the captives free!
