Jesus Talks With a Samaritan Woman

Now Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John— although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples. So he left Judea and went back once more to Galilee.

Now he had to go through Samaria. So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.

1) What is the significance with going through Samaria?
2) What is the significance with Jacob's well?
3) What is the significance with it being "noon"?

When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)

4) What is the significance for pointing out he was there alone?

The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)

Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”

5) How can we apply this to our own life?

“Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”

6) Do you believe that they worship Jacob?  Do we sometimes worship important people?

Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

7) How do you receive eternal life?

The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”

He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”

8) This is random, Why do you think Jesus changed the topic?

“I have no husband,” she replied.

Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”

9) Do you believe Jesus could tell you all you've done?

“Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”

“Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.  Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.  God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”

10) The Samaritan is stuck on religion here, what is Jesus trying to tell her?

The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”

Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”

11) What does this mean to you?

This is a beautiful story and one of my favorites. 1. I believe it is significant because normally Jews did not associate with Samaritans. 2. Jacobs well? Not sure but maybe significant of the promise? 3. I've heard that noon was significant because no one else would be there at noon and that's when she would come because her reputation was the target of much gossip. 4. He was alone because he had a special word for her....... 5. The living water that Jesus gives us is the only thing that can truly satisfy our thirsty soul. 6. Yes I believe that sometimes we put important people up on a pedal but they are just people and they will always let us down. God is a jealous God and that importance should be reserved for only Him. 7. We receive eternal life by accepting Jesus as our Lord and Saviour. 8. .....maybe so He could show her he knew about her life about mistakes but didn't care or judge her. 9. I definitely know Jesus knows all about me and everything I've done but still loved me enough the hunt me down and save me from myself. 10. He's trying to tell her He is the answer and fulfillment of all her religion. That He is more important. 11. This story is very precious to me because, I am that Samaritan woman. He could of been talking to me. And did. But looked past all my failures and mistakes and loved me so much that he went out of His way to come to me and supernaturally show me how much He loved me. Told me I LOVE YOU AND I WANT YOU AND I WILL NEVER LEAVE YOU OR FORSAKE YOU. Makes me cry even now.

How absolutely beautiful it is how God comforts us in his word. It always amazes me that he knows how we see ourselves and he will go out of his way to show us how He sees us instead. Thank you so much for sharing your heart, your story. God has amazing things in store for you and all those that love on him!
