We got our tickets, our popcorn, soda's, and our candy and we headed into the show. The seats reclined and rocked, a cup holder for my soda and lots of leg room. Nothing like they used to be when I went to the original Star Wars movie Return of the Jedi back in 1983. Nothing... except for the theme.
The intro came on, and the question was asked...what side will you choose, what side will you fight for? The light side or the dark side....
I couldn't help but think of the choices we make each and every day that reflect that question.
Star Wars is a hit for many reasons, but one of the main reasons is that we all want to learn to use "the force". I love this commercial. I love how it reflects exactly how each one of us wants to use this ability that is placed in us. We can get discouraged, but we continue to try.
But for what side?
I won't give anything away for the latest Star Wars, but thinking back to Return of the Jedi, you find you have the 2 opposing sides. The Light and the The Dark. But you also have the ones being persuaded to join each side. In this particular case, it was Darth Vader, who was being controlled by the Emperor, and Luke, who was being guided by the "force".
What made Darth Vader give up? The same things that causes us to. Hatred, anger, disappointment. He was wore down, got tired, gave up... to the dark side. I don't know about you, but when I say that, it doesn't sound much like a "power" or "victory". In order to go to the dark side, you must give up, get tired, surrender, be controlled, and then you can have the power to destroy. Power to destroy...what does that do? It actually leaves you with nothing...so...where's the power in that?
I think of the scripture that tells us to "do good to all". Galatians 6:1-10 I encourage you to read it. There are many times that Luke probably got tired, matter of fact, I know he did. Much like we get tired and weary. It takes a lot more than we have most days just to get through the things that are tossed on our plates each morning. People struggling with sickness that are not seemingly getting answered prayers of healing. Marriages that are dissolving quickly with seemingly no answered prayers for reconciliation. Death of ones we love, with no responses when we scream out "why God?" No apparent justice served when people intentionally hurt, kill, molest and torture others" Or it can be as simple as walking into your own family Christmas and listening to people cutting down the family members that are not there... it's easy to get tired. It's easy to give up. It's easy to fight for the dark side...
Because there is no power there....
Friends, just like Luke and other Jedi's, you must sometimes close your eyes and find the "force" that will help you continue when you are unable. You must find a Jedi Master that might be able to show you how to use that "force" with wisdom and for good. It takes more power than you have on your own. The "force" can not be used for evil and you can't manipulate it. The power is within you, but is only released upon kingdom intentions.
I love how Luke never gave up on his Father. Despite all that he did to kill and destroy, the power of the "force", changed Vader's heart... and it all happened because Luke did not grow weary.
I love how we can get God Moments from anything that we choose. That we all have the ability to determine light from dark...even if it's through the LucasFilm.
Who's side will you fight for?
