Today I'm reading about the Samaritan woman and Jesus. (John 4:1-30) If you don't know the story, basically Jesus sits at a well and a Samaritan woman comes to get water. First, Jesus asks her for a drink of water. Then He tells her several things about her, to which she replies, and finally she is "awakened" to the fact that this man talking to her, just might be her Savior.
I've read it so many times, that I'm starting to skim over the words. I do that sometimes. I guess what caught my attention this time, was not the words necessarily, although the words are very powerful, but this time was what the emotions were that took place when Jesus put his finger on the Samaritan's heart. Let's walk through it.
First, Jesus speaks to the Samaritan woman. He asks her to care for Him, by giving Him a drink of water. Which, in the first place, is going to take her off guard because from reading the "study" portion we are told that Samaritans were a "mixed race" and no one talked to them. Obviously that was a man made law, because Jesus didn't care what race they were. (God Moment...don't miss it!)
Her response "Why are you asking me".
Next Jesus tells her that if she only knew the gift God had waiting for her and who she was speaking to, Jesus would simply give her living water.
Her response, "How can you help, I don't see any way"
Jesus questions where her husband is. Now Jesus doesn't ask questions he doesn't already have the answer to. You realize Jesus knows us already, when Jesus asks, He simply wants to know if WE will be truthful with ourselves and hold ourselves accountable.
Her response "I don't have what people think I do".
Further, Jesus gives her some instruction about the way that Heaven works and the way the world works. He points out the difference, He changes her perspective. He states salvation only comes through the Jews, which I don't believe it meant only the Jewish people would receive salvation, He was pointing out that through the Jews, Jesus would come, to deliver salvation. The Word began to flash like neon lights, it jumped off the page, it changed her life!
Finally, Jesus says, "I am the Messiah"
Her response... GO TELL THE WORLD
