Have you ever read through the letter Paul wrote to Philippi while he was imprisoned? I did today just to try to get the context of what God was trying to get through to us when he wrote, You can do all things through Christ, who strengthens you.
Paul starts out by begging people to keep in one mind with Christ. To stand firm, to not let every opinion and doctrine sway your thoughts. It's like today, who do we believe when it comes to Christ. Do we believe the Catholics, the Baptists, the Lutherans, Professing Christians, ourselves, Lady Gaga, or Pink? Or do we all believe God? The truth is, we are all in our own walk in life, we all have temptations, lusts, wants, desires, and we want to feed them with fun and exciting things, things we believe are good for us. We like to use that phrase "only God can judge us" because we seem to think that there's safety in it for us. But what if God were to judge us, what would He say? The Bible tells us he will either say well done, or depart from me. Are you ready for judgement or is it time to start a relationship with Christ?
Next Paul goes on to say, be joyful and gentle, rejoice in the Lord always. He tells us not to worry about anything, that God will take care of it. He tells us to get our mind off of our "issues" basically and to fix our mind like cement on the things that are worthy of thinking about. That would be a great thing for us to do today. Every time you find yourself focusing on negativity, think of all the good things God has done.
Finally Paul goes on to say that he's learned to be content with whatever he has. Whether it be a lot or a little, whether in freedom or in chains. Like today, things can change from day to day. I tend to react to hurtful situations, but when I react I make mistakes. When I trust God things work out. I know it's a hard concept to learn, but it's true. We as people go through a lot of different things. We are constantly being thrown another curve ball and lemon, and we have to determine what we are going to do with it. Paul assures us that no matter what we are going through, and mind you Paul was in prison, that WE CAN DO ALL THINGS THROUGH CHRIST WHO STRENGTHENS US.
Grab it friends, it's for you!
Happy Independence Day! Here's to Freedom in truth and in Christ!
